T38 Coupling Sleeve Description

The T38 Coupling Sleeve is a load-bearing connection component engineered for top hammer rock drilling systems. Its primary function is to join T38 drill rods end-to-end, ensuring accurate rod alignment, efficient percussion energy transmission, and minimised thread wear under the cyclic high-impact loads typical of mining, tunneling, and quarrying operations.

RockHound manufactures this sleeve from premium 23CrNiMo alloy steel — a case-hardening grade widely regarded in the rock drilling industry for its exceptional combination of surface hardness and impact-resistant core toughness. Every sleeve undergoes our specialised 20-hour heat treatment process, which pushes case depth, hardness uniformity, and residual compressive stress to optimal levels for maximum service life in hard-rock conditions.

The middle stop design creates a central bridge inside the bore that prevents the two mating rod ends from contacting each other, directing all impact energy cleanly through the rod shoulders rather than stressing the coupling threads — a critical distinction in high-frequency drilling cycles.

Applicantions of T38 Coupling Sleeve

The T38 Coupling Sleeve is widely used in:

  • Underground mining (production drilling)

  • Open-pit quarrying & bench drilling

  • Tunnel face drilling & bolting

  • Construction foundation & anchor drilling

  • High-frequency percussion systems

  • Medium to hard rock formations

Suitable for Top Hammer Rock Drilling Tools, especially when connecting T38 drill rods in medium to hard rock formations.

How to choose & select

Selecting the wrong coupling sleeve is one of the leading causes of premature drill string failure. Use the following criteria before ordering. For a comprehensive guide, see: Top Hammer Coupling Sleeve: Uses, Types & Choose →

  • Match the thread profile exactly. R38 (rope thread) and T38 (trapezoidal thread) have different pitches and flank angles. They are not interchangeable — verify the thread type stamped on your existing drill rods and shank adapter before ordering.
  • Confirm sleeve length against rod diameter. The 170 mm R38 and 190 mm T38 lengths in this range are matched to standard rod OD. Non-standard rods may require a custom length — consult our technical team.
  • Prioritise middle stop for high-torque conditions. When drilling fractured or abrasive formations with frequent retractions, the middle stop design prevents rod shoulders from hammering the sleeve bore, substantially extending coupling life.
  • Specify material grade for your rock hardness. 23CrNiMo is appropriate for medium-to-hard rock (UCS 80–200+ MPa). Softer formations may tolerate lower-grade materials, but the cost saving rarely justifies the reduction in lifespan.
  • Check OEM compatibility. Our sleeves are dimensionally equivalent to Sandvik and Epiroc equivalents and are a direct drop-in replacement for most top hammer rigs.

Proper maintenance can significantly improve drilling efficiency and reduce total operating costs.

Maintenance

1.Clean threads before every shift

Remove rock fines, mud, and metal swarf from the internal thread profile using a brush. Contaminated threads accelerate galling and micro-cracking.

2.Apply thread grease consistently

Use a high-load, extreme-pressure thread grease rated for rock drilling. Dry make-up under percussion loads is the single largest cause of premature thread failure.

3.Inspect thread profile at regular intervals

Use a thread gauge or visual reference card. Replace the sleeve if thread flanks show measurable thinning, chipping, or rounded crests — worn threads concentrate impact stress and can cause sudden rod ejection.

4.Use correct make-up torque

Over-tightening exceeds the yield point of the thread root; under-tightening allows micro-movement that frettes the mating surfaces. Follow the rig manufacturer’s recommended torque specification.

5.Rotate couplings within a rod string

Running the same coupling at the same position in the string causes uneven wear distribution. Rotate sleeves along the string during planned maintenance stops to equalise service life.

6.Store horizontally in a dry environment

Stack couplings on timber dunnage rather than bare steel. Corrosion on the thread flanks — even superficial — accelerates galling during the first make-up after storage.

FAQ

A coupling sleeve is used to connect two drill rods in a top hammer rock drilling system.
It ensures stable energy transfer from the drill to the rock while maintaining accurate alignment of the drill rods during drilling operations.

T38 Coupling Sleeve is a middle stop coupling sleeve designed specifically for T38 thread drill rods.
It is widely used in mining, quarrying, tunneling, and construction drilling where top hammer drilling tools are applied.

A Middle Stop design prevents the drill rods from meeting in the center of the sleeve, ensuring that the impact energy is transmitted through the rod ends rather than the sleeve threads, which extends the life of the coupling.

We support laser engraving and mechanical stamping. Maximum logo or mark size is 100 × 100 mm. OEM batches are available with your brand identity on the coupling body. Contact our team with your artwork file and required quantity for a tailored quote.

To select the correct coupling sleeve, consider:

  • Drill rod thread type (T38, R32, T45, etc.)

  • Required sleeve length

  • Drilling conditions and rock hardness

  • Compatibility with your top hammer drill rig

Service life varies with rock hardness, drilling pressure, and maintenance discipline. In field testing on medium-hard granite formations, RockHound 23CrNiMo sleeves typically achieve 15–20% more meterage than comparable carbon steel alternatives. Consistent thread greasing and correct make-up torque are the two maintenance factors with the greatest impact on longevity.

Yes. Our sleeves are manufactured to the same thread geometry and dimensional tolerances as OEM Sandvik and Epiroc couplings and serve as direct drop-in replacements. Product codes 302-5517-5656 (R38) and 302-5519-7676 (T38) correspond to standard industry cross-references.
